Review
In the summer of 1946, Alfred Hitchcock released one of his most iconic films, “Notorious.” Starring Ingrid Bergman, Cary Grant, and Claude Rains, this film is considered one of the greatest spy thrillers ever made. The movie follows a young woman named Alicia Huberman (Bergman) as she works for the American government to infiltrate a group of Nazis in Brazil.
The plot is complex and engaging from start to finish. Hitchcock’s skill as a director is evident in every scene, from the opening shot of Alicia’s drunken meltdown after her father’s conviction as a Nazi sympathizer to the intense climax set in the villain’s mansion. As expected from Hitchcock, suspense and tension are prevalent throughout. The film has twists and turns that will keep you on edge until its gripping conclusion.
The film also benefits from its strong cast. Ingrid Bergman delivers an incredible performance as Alicia. She portrays her character with subtlety and nuance, allowing us to feel her emotions even when she is not speaking. Cary Grant plays the suave Devlin smoothly but with complexity; he masterfully conveys his character’s conflicts between duty and love.
While Bergman and Grant get most of the attention for their performances in “Notorious,” Claude Rains steals scenes with his portrayal of Alexander Sebastian–Alicia’s husband who also happens to be a Nazi sympathizer. He brings both charm and menace in equal parts to his role.
“Notorious” was released shortly after World War II ended but before any real reckoning with America’s involvement with Nazism had begun. Due to this timing issue, it received some backlash when it first debuted because some felt that it portrayed Nazis too sympathetically or that its female lead was too sexualized. However, now it is regarded by critics as one of Hitchcock’s finest works.
The score by Roy Webb adds another layer to the tension and atmosphere of the film. It sets the mood with its haunting strings and bold brass passages, heightening every moment of drama. The score underlines every emotional beat and adds to the film’s overall impact.
The cinematography is also remarkable. The camera work is inventive, with memorable shots like the upside-down close-up of Bergman’s face as she drinks herself into oblivion or the overhead shot of a key being thrown down the stairs. The final shot of Alicia and Devlin kissing while Sebastian lies dying below them is one of cinema’s most famous moments.
The production design and costumes are worth mentioning for their attention to detail. From Brazilian party dresses to elegant black tie suits, each costume fits seamlessly into its scene. Hitchcock even had a set designer create a wine bottle that would appear ordinary but was filled with uranium ore – an untraceable substance that figures into Sebastian’s Nazi plot.
Critics still debate about whether “Notorious” is Hitchcock’s best film, but it’s certainly one of his most influential works. Its themes of deception and betrayal have been echoed in everything from James Bond movies to “The Americans.” Its excellent cast added depth to the story, and it has become a landmark among ’40s-era Hollywood films.
“Notorious” received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains) and Best Original Screenplay (Ben Hecht), but it didn’t win either award. Still, it remains a classic film noir masterpiece that has stood the test of time. It is a thrilling tale of espionage that you won’t forget quickly; Once you see “Notorious,” you’ll never forget those few stolen nights in Rio de Janeiro between Alicia and Devlin while spying on Nazis!
