In the grand tradition of the American literary giant Mark Twain, let’s take a journey back through time to explore the epic tale that is “Snack Bar Budapest”. This 1988 Hungarian film, directed by Tinto Brass, tells the story of Karchy (played brilliantly by Francesco Casale), a young Hungarian man who takes a job as a cashier at the titular snack bar in Budapest. What follows is a wild ride through love, lust, and political upheaval in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.
As our story begins, Karchy is a fresh-faced and idealistic young man with dreams of becoming a journalist. He’s also hopelessly in love with the beautiful Xenia (played by the stunning Ornella Muti), who works at the snack bar. But as he quickly learns, life in Budapest is not all sunshine and roses. The country is in turmoil, with protests and riots breaking out all around him.
Despite these challenges, Karchy remains determined to make something of himself. He writes articles for a local newspaper and even becomes embroiled in an underground political movement. But his true passion remains Xenia, and he soon finds himself caught up in a passionate affair with her.

Meanwhile, Xenia’s ex-husband (played by Stefano Dionisi) reenters her life and throws everything into chaos. The two men engage in a violent confrontation that leaves Karchy questioning whether he truly knows what he wants out of life.
Through it all, “Snack Bar Budapest” manages to capture both the beauty and despair of this magical city on the Danube River. The cinematography is absolutely stunning, with sweeping shots of Budapest’s most beautiful landmarks. The score, by Academy Award-winning composer Ennio Morricone, is equally breathtaking.
But what truly makes this film stand out are the performances of its cast. Casale and Muti have a chemistry that is palpable onscreen, and their characters’ love story is one for the ages. Dionisi brings a fierce intensity to his role as Xenia’s ex-husband, and the rest of the supporting cast are equally impressive.
Unfortunately, “Snack Bar Budapest” was not widely seen outside of Hungary when it was released. It received mixed reviews from critics and failed to make much of an impact at the box office.
