Review

Have you ever felt like a stranger in your own home? This is the premise of the critically acclaimed movie “The Maid.” This Chilean drama film, released in 2009, directed by Sebastián Silva, has been praised for its fresh perspective on class and culture.

The story revolves around Raquel (Catalina Saavedra), a long-serving maid who has worked for the Valdes family for over 23 years. She has become so much a part of the family that she considers herself a member. However, as she approaches her 41st birthday, her health and attitude begin to deteriorate.

As the days go by, Raquel becomes increasingly isolated from her family and starts to hate her job. She starts acting out, creating problems and tension in the household. This does not sit well with Pilar (Claudia Celedón), the matriarch of the family, who tries to intervene and help Raquel overcome her issues.

The film does an excellent job of portraying class differences in Chilean society. It highlights the many challenges that domestic workers face such as mistreatment from their employers and discrimination because of their social status. The film throws light on important issues that are often ignored or brushed aside by society.

“The Maid” is an exceptional film in terms of its storytelling and character development. Catalina Saavedra’s performance as Raquel was nothing short of a masterpiece; she conveyed all the emotions that were required for this role brilliantly. Claudia Celedón did an excellent job as Pilar too – her portrayal was nuanced and empathetic.

Furthermore, “The Maid” also tackles themes regarding mental health and aging. Through Raquel’s character arc we can see how mental health struggles can affect a person not just personally but also professionally if left untreated or unacknowledged.

One particular scene where Raquel creates chaos at a dinner party hosted by Pilar sticks with me. It was an intense scene that showcased how Raquel’s behavior had spiraled out of control and how she needed help.

The movie received high praise from audiences and critics alike. It won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2009 and was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 2010.

Silva’s direction was masterful; he knew when to create tension, when to show empathy, and when to let his actors shine. His ability to tell a story through subtle moments is a testament to his talent as a filmmaker.

The film’s cinematography was also excellent, with beautiful shots of Valparaíso, the port city where the film is set. The music by Pepe Mogt was also great – it captured the mood of each scene perfectly.

In conclusion, “The Maid” is a must-watch for anyone who is interested in foreign cinema or wants to learn more about class differences in society. It is an engaging and thought-provoking film that will stay with you long after you’ve watched it. If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it – you won’t regret it.
