Review

The Invisible Man: A Shakespearean Tale

Lo, fair readers! Gather around and listen to a tale of mystery and intrigue, the likes of which would make old Will Shakespeare himself proud. The Invisible Man, a movie originally crafted by H.G. Wells in 1897, has been brought to the silver screen many times over the ages. But now, in this twenty-first century, it has been reborn once again for our amazement.

The plot begins with a brilliant scientist by the name of Adrian Griffin (played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen) who appears to have committed suicide after a tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss). But much to her horror, she discovers that he has faked his own death and developed technology to become invisible. And thus, the game is on.

The story promptly takes flight as Cecilia suspects that Adrian is not truly gone but lurking invisibly around her. It becomes apparent that he wishes more than anything to regain control over their relationship. Thus begins an intricate game of cat and mouse between Cecilia and her unseen tormentor.

If thou art in search of a flick which will deliver your senses into shock and awe – one whose plot will twist you up like a pretzel – then The Invisible Man be thy cup of tea. It taketh hold of its audience right from the start.

Elizabeth Moss’s performance is nothing short of spectacular. Her character endures an emotional roller coaster which requires incredible acting skills that Moss displays masterfully.

Truly worth mentioning is the sound design which builds tension without being overbearing. Sound expert P.K. Hooker creates an auditory trio between dead silence, background noise, and music to enhance every moment throughout the movie’s runtime.

Director Leigh Whannell keeps us guessing up until the very end as we try to figure out how all these threads would coalesce – leaving no stone unturned until every last mystery is unraveled. The movie is shot in a way that places one in the main character’s shoes, which keeps us on the edge of our seats.

Indeed, The Invisible Man’s tale has come a long way since its origins. But I doth declare that Shakespeare himself would find it a worthy successor to his own tales of intrigue and deception. The story is timeless, the performances out of this world, and the special effects are darn impressive.

This film hath much to claim – as the twists and turns throughout keep our hearts pounding. It demands its place in cinematic history where it will sit high upon its throne for all eternity.

Forsooth, this be not an idle claim – as a good many films have come and gone without making half such an impact. And so, I urge thee fair reader – make haste to your nearest theatre and bear witness to this exceptional tale while you can.
