Review

In the sprawling metropolis of London, far away from the sleepy streets of Macondo, a young woman named Laura (played by Jane Horrocks) spends her days in solitude. Her only solace comes from the records her father left behind – dust-covered vinyls that she spins on an old-fashioned turntable. But while Laura’s voice is pure and sweet, she hides her talent away – afraid to share it with anyone.

That all changes when she meets Ray Say (Ewan McGregor), a sleazy agent with a heart of gold who’s looking for the next big thing. When Ray overhears Laura singing in her bedroom, he knows he’s found his ticket to the big time. Laura is skeptical at first – but with Ray’s encouragement (and his willingness to exploit her gift for profit), she finds herself performing on stage for the first time.

But as Laura starts to make a name for herself, she draws unwanted attention from two men in particular: Mr. Boo (Jim Broadbent), the owner of a local cabaret who sees potential in her voice but doesn’t want to lose control over his performers; and Billy (Michael Caine), a burnt-out musician who recognizes something special in Laura but knows firsthand how cruel the music industry can be.

As forces both inside and outside of herself threaten to tear Laura apart, she must decide whether her dreams are worth sacrificing everything else in her life – including her relationships with those closest to her.

It’s easy to see why Gabriel Garcia Marquez would have appreciated Little Voice – like much of his own work, it’s full of characters struggling against forces beyond their control. And while it may not be as magical or surreal as some of Marquez’s stories, it shares his sense that there is something otherworldly about everyday life.

One standout element of Little Voice is its cast. Horrocks shines as Laura, whose shyness and vulnerability make her an easy character to root for. McGregor is slimy but charming as Ray Say, a character who could easily have been one-note but who is given unexpected depth. Broadbent is reliably excellent as always, and Caine is a standout in a small but crucial role.

But perhaps the most impressive performance in Little Voice comes from Horrocks herself, whose singing voice soars above everything else in the film. While she’s always been a talented actress, it’s her singing that truly elevates her performance – and it’s no surprise that she earned an Academy Award nomination for her work.

Another key element of Little Voice is its score. The film’s soundtrack draws heavily from the classic songs that Laura sings throughout the film – many of which were made famous by artists like Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey. Hearing Laura’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow” or “Big Spender” is enough to send chills down your spine – and it’s clear that music plays a vital role not just in Laura’s life, but in the film as a whole.

And yet, despite all of its strengths, Little Voice isn’t without its flaws. At times, it can feel like the film doesn’t quite know what story it wants to tell – is it a coming-of-age story about Laura finding her voice? A cautionary tale about the dangers of fame? A love letter to classic show tunes? By trying to incorporate all of these elements, Little Voice occasionally feels disjointed.

Additionally, while some might argue that Billy’s storyline adds depth to the film (and Caine’s performance is undeniably great), his character feels somewhat unnecessary overall. His relationship with Laura doesn’t quite ring true – and while his presence does add some much-needed gravity to the film’s final act, his storyline could have been cut without losing much.

Despite these issues, however, Little Voice remains an engaging and moving film. It’s a story about the transformative power of music, and about the ways in which our passions can both lift us up and tear us down. And while it may not be quite on par with the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, it shares his sense that there is something magical lurking just beyond the edges of our everyday lives – if only we know where to look for it.
