Review

In Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, director Eli Craig crafts a comedic horror movie that flips the slasher genre on its head. Instead of having a group of teenagers terrorized by hillbilly villains, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil features two rednecks who are mistaken for serial killers by a group of college students on a camping trip.

The film takes place in the woods of West Virginia, where Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine) have just purchased their dream vacation home. As they begin fixing up the property, a group of college kids on a camping trip stumble upon them and mistake them for backwoods murderers.

From there, hilarity ensues as Tucker and Dale try to convince the students that they are not killers while also attempting to protect themselves from the accidental deaths caused by the students’ own panic.

At its core, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is a movie about miscommunication and prejudice. The college students assume that because Tucker and Dale look like stereotypical hillbillies, they must be murderers. Similarly, Tucker and Dale initially view the students as snobbish city-dwellers who underestimate their intelligence.

What Craig does so well in his writing is to subvert audience expectations at every turn. For example, in traditional slasher movies, there’s always one character who appears paranoid or overly cautious — someone whose fears are dismissed by other characters but ultimately proven correct when danger strikes. In Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, that character is played to perfection by Labine’s portrayal of Dale.

But while there are certainly moments of horror in the film (like when one character accidentally jumps into a wood chipper), it never loses sight of its comedic roots.

The cast is incredibly strong across the board, with Tudyk and Labine delivering standout performances as the titular characters. Katrina Bowden also shines as Allison, one of the college students who becomes friendly with Tucker and Dale.

One of the film’s greatest strengths is its self-awareness. Craig knows that audiences are well-versed in the tropes of slasher movies, so he uses that knowledge to his advantage. For example, when one character accidentally impales himself on a tree branch, Tucker remarks that it was a “pretty standard horror movie move.”

The film also has a number of memorable one-liners, like when Dale says (referring to Allison) that he’s never “seen someone fall into so many accidents.” And there’s something undeniably satisfying about watching Tucker and Dale outsmart the college students at every turn.

While the film was not a huge commercial success upon its release in 2010, it has since gained a cult following thanks to word-of-mouth among genre fans. And it’s not hard to see why — Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is a smart, hilarious take on a tired genre.

In terms of production, the film faced some challenges during filming. According to an interview with Tudyk, they were forced to cut several scenes due to budget constraints. Additionally, they had to shoot many of their outdoor scenes in inclement weather.

But despite these obstacles, Craig and his cast and crew were able to create a film that feels like both an homage and parody of classic horror movies.

In terms of critical reception, the film received mostly positive reviews upon its release. However, some critics felt that the movie relied too heavily on its central joke (the miscommunication between the two groups) and ultimately fell flat.

But for those who appreciate horror comedies with a bit of bite (pun intended), Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil is definitely worth checking out. It’s inventive, well-crafted, and genuinely funny — three qualities that make for an enjoyable movie-watching experience.
